Case Study
FANCL Japan
FANCL automated complex mixed-SKU piece picking operations using MujinOS-powered robotics, enabling autonomous picking, sorting, barcode scanning, and order fulfillment across a wide range of product types. The system adapts in real time to varying packaging formats and product positions, reducing manual intervention while improving operational resilience and order accuracy.
Challenge
At its Osaka logistics center, FANCL faced the challenge of automating mixed-SKU order fulfillment in an environment where products arrived in different packaging formats and orientations. Traditional robotic systems struggled with items positioned deep inside containers, unstable products, and packaging materials that required manual handling, creating operational bottlenecks and limiting automation effectiveness.
Solution
Using MujinOS and the MujinController platform, FANCL deployed an intelligent robotic piece-picking solution powered by advanced 3D vision, autonomous motion planning, and adaptive end-of-arm tooling. The system automatically selects the appropriate gripper for each product, removes packaging inserts when necessary, performs six-side barcode scanning, and intelligently adjusts picking strategies based on item characteristics and placement.
By integrating multiple fulfillment tasks into a single robotic workflow, FANCL created a highly flexible automation solution capable of handling diverse product assortments without manual intervention.
